Update Romaine Lettuce Outbreak

FDA has provided an update on the romaine lettuce outbreak and health alert. For the latest information see this link:

Statement from FDA on the current romaine lettuce outbreak investigation

Highlights of this situation:

  • Refer those reporting illness to their healthcare provider if it could be associated with romaine lettuce

    • There are currently no illnesses in WA related to this outbreak

  • There is no recall of romaine lettuce - the FDA had requested the industry to do a voluntary “market withdrawal” which was intended to remove the product from service
  • FDA has new recommendations for romaine to be labeled with harvest dates/areas

    • They believe the romaine implicated in the outbreak are from a growing area in California that is at the end of season and so new product appearing on shelves should now be safe
