Throughout NE Washington, most recent COVID-19 infections occurred in unvaccinated individuals. A detailed review of COVID-19 cases that were reported from September 1 to December 12, 2021 show there were 3,347 cases that occurred in Ferry, Pend Oreille, and Stevens Counties. This time period represents the greatest surge of cases experienced yet as the Delta variant hit our area.
Of all those cases, only 13% were in fully vaccinated people and were defined as “breakthrough events.” Those participating in public health interviews reported the three most common symptoms as cough, headache, and muscle aches. As Omicron is making its way into Washington State, this information is useful in two principle ways.
- If you have been exposed or experience these symptoms, which don’t always include loss of taste/smell, it’s important to get tested and limit your contact with other people while you await test results. If you do test positive, follow quarantine guidelines to reduce further spread.
- The data shows that vaccines work amazingly well to prevent COVID-19. If you are not currently vaccinated, or if you need a booster dose, please reach out to a local vaccine provider.
